Madam President, Smt. Droupadi Murmu

Smt. Droupadi Murmu, 15th President of India

श्रीमती द्रौपदी मुर्मू, भारत की १५वी राष्ट्र-प्रमुख / राष्ट्राध्यक्ष

India has created its own unique history in living memory of its citizens.

India has elected Smt. Droupadi Murmu ji as 15th President of India and she will assume oath to the highest office of India on 25th July 2022.

She is India’s daughter from tribal community from Uperbeda village of Mayurbhanj district from remote part of eastern state of Odisha.

A self-made career woman, a graduate, service person, teacher, public servant as municipal councillor, MLA (10 years), State Minister (6 years), Governor (6 years), overcame depression after loss of two sons and husband, a life long social service worker, pledged to donate eyes, and youngest President of India and first to be elected to the highest office born after Independence.

I do not think the liberal elites understand what message her journey and her becoming President sends to the masses all across India and even South Asia. She represents inspiration and hope for all. She made it, born in independent India, so can others in various walks of their life. Prime Minister standing up on her arrival at all events and Chiefs of Armed Forces saluting her as their Supreme Commander. This message of inspiration, hard-work and hope is going to all homes and to the remotest village and tribal hut of our nation.

This has to be the biggest message to misogynists at work places too. A meritorious woman in top position and in command of decision making is to be accepted, respected and cordially worked with.

For the business and religious conversion vultures, the tribals were seen as soft targets. Smt. Droupadi Murmu will uphold secular values of our constitution and shall practice her religion (Hindu Sanatan Dharma) as her individual choice. Tribals of India, through her as their identity, do not need to be “rescued” either economically by throwing bread-crumbs for a land deal, nor “rescued” out of “sins” assumed by non-native religions.

She will host Heads of States of various nations, be received with full military honours on red carpet by various nations. Being a peoples’ person all her life, servicing various sections of society, she will have doors to Presidential Palace – the Rastrapati Bhavan – open for all, meeting-hosting-serving-dining with people. As a practicing Hindu, she ofcourse would offer her devotion and worship at various temples across India and abroad. She remains neither ashamed of her tribal roots, nor her marital status as a widow stopped her from pursuits of life – social and professional. She has been never seen play ‘socially backward/discriminated’ victim card through her life. As Head of the State, she will ofcourse attend, participate and would be first in line at Sri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir ‘prana-pratishtha’ ie consecration ritual ceremony. A major introspection moment for the casteists and patriarchists in the society.

Madam President hails from economically weaker section of society from the state of Odisha. As Governor of State of Jharkhand, with a significant tribal population and a region which faced decades of economic backwardness and discrimination from the central government for infrastructure and economic developmental work funding, she has been an important factor in bringing central government’s focus to Jharkhand for economic infrastructure development projects. Being a person from economic backward class, she has publicly spoken about poverty through her experiences. She has lived poverty. She understands the micro and macro dynamics which impact lives of poor people. Her experiences as a career woman who worked to run her family finances, as part of executive governance structure (municipal councillor, MLA, Minister) and as Governor (head of State) will be very important. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led Union Government of India shall receive her guidance to define policies to elevate economic standard of economically weaker sections of society.

A polite yet outspoken woman, a tribal who focused on developing her identity through merit, a career woman who broke both economic and gender barriers through sheer hardwork and upskilling for various jobs, a leader who remained humble to serve people including pledging to donate her eyes, overcame hardships, depression and discrimination by focusing on self-strength and developing strong-self instead of playing victim card – I believe we have a true-sense influencer as President of India who most likely never had a social media account.

Welcome Madam President!
